What is Reiki?

Reiki is a gentle form of energy healing that supports the body’s natural capacity to restore balance. Originating in Japan in the late 19th century, the practice recognises that human wellbeing is not only physical but also energetic, emotional and spiritual.

During a Reiki session, the practitioner works with subtle life energy through light touch or by holding the hands just above the body. This quiet and attentive process can help settle the nervous system, soften inner tension and create the conditions for deeper healing processes to unfold.

Many people seek Reiki for stress, exhaustion, emotional overwhelm or simply the need for a space of deep rest in a busy life.

A gentle and non-invasive practice

Reiki is a safe and non-invasive form of healing that can be received by people of all backgrounds and belief systems. Although the founder of Reiki, Mikao Usui, had Christian influences, Reiki itself is not tied to any religion or spiritual doctrine.

In my practice the emphasis is simply on presence, clarity of intention and respect for the client’s own healing process.

How I practice Reiki?

My approach to Reiki is informed primarily by the teachings of Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki, as well as by anthroposophical understandings of the human being and subtle energy systems.

Rather than approaching Reiki as a technique for “fixing” problems, I see it as a relational process. The practitioner quiets their own mind and nervous system, allowing healing energy to flow where it is needed. In this way the session becomes less about directing energy and more about creating the conditions for the body and psyche to reorganise themselves.

This perspective aligns closely with my broader work as a holistic practitioner and homeopath, where the emphasis is always on supporting the body's own intelligence rather than forcing change.

What happens during a Reiki session?

Reiki sessions usually take place on a comfortable massage table, with the client fully clothed. For those who prefer not to lie down, sessions can also be given while seated.

Most people experience Reiki as deeply calming. It is common to drift into a meditative state or fall asleep during the session. Afterward clients often report feeling:

- more relaxed

- clearer mentally

- emotionally lighter

- physically restored

Sometimes the effects are subtle and unfold gradually over the following days. For this reason it can be helpful to allow some quiet time after your session for integration.

My personal experience with Reiki

I first experienced Reiki in 2014 while searching for support with chronic full-body eczema. I was looking for something to help with my symptoms for almost 18 months. After my first Reiki session, my symptoms were significantly better. After six Reiki treatments, all symptoms were gone. That is when I decided to become a Reiki practitioner myself.

Although years later I experienced a brief flare-up, this was successfully treated with homeopathy and the condition has not returned since.

This experience shaped my understanding of healing: that it is rarely linear, but that the body always carries an inherent potential to restore balance when given the right support.
